How do the types of GND filters differ and when should they be used?

  • Soft GND filter:

These filters have a very smooth transition from transparent to dark. They are suitable for scenes that have a wide or interrupted transition from the sky to the actual foreground. An example of a scene that should be shot with a soft GND filter is a mountainous landscape crossing the horizon line. A rock formation in the sea is also predestined for photography with a soft GND filter.

  • Hard GND filter:

These types of GND filters have a hard transition from clear to dark. They are suitable for scenes that have a highly visible transition from the sky to the actual foreground. This filter is most useful for landscape shots in which no elements project beyond the horizon, for example, shots of the sea with a wide view of the ocean. These filters can also be advantageous when a hard transition against the sun is needed.

  • Reverse GND filter:

Reverse GND filters with an "inverted transition" are similar to the hard GND filter except that the darkest part of the filter is in the middle. These filters are for shots taken against a light source and where the light is most intense at the horizon.

Which accessories do I need for a shot with a grey filter?

Basically the same rules apply for a shot with a grey filter as for a long exposure at night. First of all, for the photography with a grey filter, you absolutely need a stable tripod. Depending on the exposure time, it is sometimes impossible to take pictures from the hand with exposure times of 1/40 or even more without blurring the photo. Experienced photographers may still manage 1/20, but as soon as a photo is taken with an exposure of one second or more, it is not possible to work without a tripod. In addition, you should either use the camera's self-timer or use a remote shutter release to take a shot without shaking the image.

How to calculate the right exposure time?

The strength of your grey filter indicates by how much longer you have to expose. So if you want to shoot with an ND8 filter in front of the lens the exposure time would be 8 times longer, with an ND64 64 times and so on. If the camera outputs 1/10 second as the perfect exposure time, with an ND64 gray filter it would be 6.4 seconds.

In which strength should I choose my ND filter?

We have created a table that shows in which situation which ND filter should be screwed onto the lens. Below you can see which filter has which neutral density, causes an increase in shutter speed and darkens by how many f-stops.

Filter

Situation
ND4 Filter The ND4 filter is used in moderate light conditions and is suitable for rainy and stormy days. They are also used at sunsets, sunrises and when the sun is at its zenith.
ND8 Filter The ND8 filter is used on sunny days and when the sky is slightly cloudy.
ND16 Filter The ND16 filter is the standard filter for sunny days.
ND32 Filter The ND32 filter is used on sunny days when there is a lot of light.
ND64 Filter

The ND64 filter should be used for snowy landscapes on sunny days, reflective water surfaces or similar.

ND1000 Filter

The ND1000 filter is mainly used in landscape photography to create blurred clouds and soft water.
